A message from Ruaraidh Sutherland, New Director of Music Ministry:
Welcome to St John’s of Lattingtown and to our music ministry. St John’s offers our music in service to the glory of God, and this hugely important ministry is at the heart of our parish. We celebrate our distinctive Anglican musical traditions, through which many people find the deepest expression of their faith.
St John’s Parish Choir
The St. John's Parish Choir is open to all from high school age and older and draws singers from our parish and the surrounding area. Choral Scholarships (see below) are awarded to talented vocal students attending local area high schools and colleges. The choir is anchored by our section leaders and sings a wide range of music from the treasury of Anglican repertoire regularly at the Sunday services of Eucharist and Evensong. Concerts and other special events are offered during the year.

Sunday, October 15, 4:00 pm – Evensong
Choral Evensong is sung Evening Prayer, which has been a daily offering in the Anglican Church begun in England (Episcopal Church in the US) since the middle of the 16th Century. The choir will sing most of the service, giving the congregation the opportunity to sit, listen, be present with God, and pray through the music. There are two readings and two hymns in the service. The prayers are sung back and forth by the Officiant (priest) and the choir. The Canticles of Evening Prayer (Magnificat, or Song of Mary, and the Nunc dimittis, or Song of Simeon) are sung by the choir, as is the anthem. It is a service of prayer through music.
Sunday, November 5, 4:00 pm – Requiem (Faure)
A Requiem is a Mass or Holy Eucharist offered on behalf of the dead. The title originates from the first words for this rite in the Roman tradition, requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine (“Give them eternal rest, O Lord”). The period around All Soulstide is a suitable time for us, as a parish, to come together to give thanks and remember our those who have entered into their rest, particularly over the past year. The Parish Choir will offer Gabriel Fauré’severgreen Requiem during the Liturgy, to the accompaniment of organ, violin, ‘cello, and harp. All are welcome.
