FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What should I wear?
Put on your "Sunday best," or come as you are. You might be coming in from running errands or you may be rushing out after the service for a soccer game. Dress in whatever way feels appropriate and comfortable for you.
Can I serve during Worship?
If you or a child in your care would like to participate in worship as an acolyte, greeter, intercessor, Eucharistic minister, lector/reader, and/or usher, contact

Are children welcome?
Yes, we welcome people of all ages because we know that our community is stronger when we come together.
What if I am not an Episcopalian?
Many who visit St. John’s come from other faith traditions, and all are welcome and encouraged to participate. You will be given a bulletin as you come in to help navigate the service. The red Book of Common Prayer and blue hymnal are available in the pews. We are happy to answer any questions you may have about the Episcopal tradition, and hope that you will feel comfortable worshipping with us.
Do you take an offering each week?
Yes, we take an offering each week to help offset the costs of running the church. It is never required; all giving is between yourself and God. If you have been blessed by the ministry of St. John's, we invite you to considering making a donation, and we are grateful for your generosity
Where should I park?
You may use the large grass parking lot across Lattingtown Road, and there limited parking spaces and street parking available along Old Tappan Road. Use crosswalks when crossing the street. Handicapped-accessible parking is available on Old Tappan Road in front of the church.
Clergy, Staff & Vestry
The office and church are open 9:00AM until 3:00PM, Monday through Friday.

ABOUT Molly Jane (“MJ”) Layton began as Priest-in-Charge at St. John’s in the fall of 2025. Previously she was Associate Rector for Congregational Care and Worship at the Parish of Calvary-St. George’s in Manhattan. MJ was born and raised in Massachusetts. Before hearing her call to ordained ministry, MJ graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (B.A.), Cornell University (M.A.) and Teachers College at Columbia University (M.Ed.), and spent over a decade as an educator, teaching Latin, Greek, philosophy, and history to high school students in Marion, MA, Dubai, UAE, and Brooklyn, NY. She received her M.Div. from Virginia Theological Seminary in May 2022, where she co-edited a four volume Daily Office lectionary in the original biblical languages: A Student’s Companion to the Daily Office in Greek and Hebrew. MJ is married to Andrew Jaw, whom she met while hiking the Camino de Santiago. Together they enjoy exploring new cuisines, traveling around the world, and spending quality time with family and friends, both old and new. They have one son, Caleb.

Ruaraidh Sutherland
Director of Music Ministry
ABOUT Ruaraidh Sutherland is an experienced choirmaster with sixteen years of professional experience, from leading beginners to seasoned professionals. He previously worked at Christ Church in Rye, NY as organist and choirmaster, raising the quality of the choir to inspire and lead the congregation in worship. Ruaraidh has experience directing traditional Episcopal music program, growing various choirs in both discipleship and musicianship, and leading large, innovative fundraising events (fundraising events included Cabaret evenings, a sponsored Hymnathon, and a chili cook-off followed by a silent movie). Highlights of his tenure included visits by Katherine Dienes-Williams to work with the choir, and in 2018 leading a choir tour of the UK where they drew praise for the quality of their tone. In addition, Ruaraidh is an experienced organist, both in church and concert hall (although nothing thrills quite as much as accompanying a psalm or leading rousing hymn singing!) and has developed further classroom and pastoral skills while working in the UK Public School sector.
The Vestry of St. John's
The Vestry is an elected body of members of St. John's, who represent the parish with regard to its finances, property, and other resources. The basic responsibilies of the vestry are to to manage resources and finances, to select the rector, and to help articulate and support the church's mission by word and deed. The Vestry is supported by the following Standing Committees: the Executive Committee, the Investment Committee, the Buildings and Grounds Committee, the Finance Committee, and the Stewardship Committee.
